Open Source Community Business
_I’m going to start a micro business called ‘Gypsy Hens’ where we rent out ‘Gypsy Caravan’ chicken coops + chickens to folk in our area for £3 a week rent. (2 week minimum rent). We are aiming it at local mums and their children so they can have the joy of collecting their own eggs from the bottom of the garden.
The business is designed so that customers just feed the hens and collect their eggs. Through the business design many of the drawbacks of keeping hens have been removed for the customer. For example, the coops and runs are designed to be cleaned out twice a year which I will do while delivering the chicken food. I will also be their personal ‘chicken coach’ and help with maximizing health and year round egg production.
This business as part of my Permaculture design diploma, but mainly to build relationships with my local community. I also want to do it as an experiment in ‘on site waste transformation’ because each coop will transform waste food, plastic barrels and tree prunings into a sustainable system which produces: Eggs, manure, resilience and joy in abundance!
The business is sustainable because it needs no funding or charity. With 77 customers I could earn the current minimum wage. Or 231 customers would generate £30,000 p.a. This can be done by one person working 30 hours a week.
The challenge is to do all this with only £500 funding, a garden shed, a mobile phone, a bike, and my labour.
My plan is to create an open source business.
